Preserve Historic Southport Village

What Have We Been Up To?

  • Acquired former Pequot School from Town of Fairfield, supervised its renovation and leases it to The Southport School (formerly Eagle Hill) which thrives today.

  • The Southport Conservancy saved the iconic and historically important Southport Freight Station in the heart of Southport Village from demolition and was restored to original condition between 1988 and 1993. The Southport Conservancy has been a loyal steward dedicated to its continued preservation while maintaining the building and the grounds ever since.

  • Contributed funds to purchase “The Lower Wharf” at the mouth of Southport Harbor to be used in perpetuity as a public dock and open space.

  • Accepted contributions to purchase Southport Village Park, at the north end of the village (Prospect Lane & Pequot Avenue) to guarantee that the Southport Village will forever be bound on that side by trees, greenery and open space.

  • Contributed funds to improve the Southport Park (Old Post Road), owned by the Sasquanaug Association.

  • Developed the Southport Walking Tour App, based on the original 1993 version narrated by the late Southporter, Jason Robards. Provides users with a new appreciation for the history and landscape of Southport.

  • Partnered with Aspetuck Land Trust to acquire property opposite Southport Beach, protecting it from development.

  • Made statement at Town Planning and Zoning in January 2018, against the nature and size of development at 65 Station Street.  Proposed development is currently off the table.

  • Founding member of Southport Non-profit Round Table.

  • The Southport Conservancy sells three books: The Southport Packet Volume 1 and 2, and Southport: The Architectural Legacy of a Connecticut Village at the Fairfield Women's Exchange, Lattice House and Fairfield Museum Gift Shop.

  • Worked on the restoration of the of trees in the center of the Village in conjunction with Olivers Nursery and the Town of Fairfield.

  • The Southport Conservancy is a major sponsor of the annual Blessing of The Fleet which is tentatively scheduled this year to be on June 12th.
